HPNF Awarded Spanish-Language Access Grant
The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) has received a $107,000 grant from Elea Institute for a new project titled the Spanish-Language Access to Hospice and Palliative Nursing Certification Initiative.
Elea Institute is committed to ensuring all persons have access to high-quality hospice and palliative care and has awarded numerous grants supporting enhanced community access and educational resources. This grant project will address a critical barrier to equitable hospice and palliative care training: language access. Spanish-speaking nursing assistants are an essential part of the healthcare workforce, yet limited access to Spanish-language certification and educational resources creates barriers to professional advancement and equitable care delivery.
HPNF will work in collaboration with the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) and the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC) to translate key certification and preparatory materials into Spanish and implement multilingual learning and testing support systems. Specifically, the grant will cover translation of HPCC’s Certified Hospice and Palliative Nursing Assistant (CHPNA®) certification exam, the exam candidate handbook, application materials, exam delivery platform, and remote proctoring instructions.
Grant funding will also support translation of HPNA’s certification preparation resources, including the Core Curriculum and Study Guide, certification prep interactive module, and practice exam, as well as translation functionality within HPNA’s learning management system.
By expanding access to certification pathways, this project will strengthen workforce readiness, promote standardized competencies, and support a more diverse hospice and palliative care workforce. “We are incredibly grateful for this investment to expand access to hospice and palliative care resources in Spanish,” said HPNA Chief Executive Officer Virginia Marshall, MSN, ACNP-BC, ACHPN®, FPCN®. “This generous funding will remove the unnecessary obstacles that healthcare professionals face when seeking these resources, further improving the quality of care provided to patients and families.”
In addition to the translation of the exam and prep materials, scholarships will be available through HPNF to Spanish-speaking nursing assistants pursuing certification preparation and testing.
