Learn About Recertification
Every certificant is required to recertify every four years. The renewal process is called the Hospice and Palliative Accrual for Recertification (HPAR), which requires fulfilling practice hour requirements and accumulating required points through various professional activities. HPCC encourages certificants to work toward recertification over the four-year certification period. Learning Plans may be submitted for renewal up to one year before the certification expiration.
The requirements of HPAR help demonstrate continuing competence by allowing professionals to exhibit critical thinking skills and express competencies through continuing education, scholarly accomplishments, and professional contributions.
- ACHPN®, APHSW-C, CHPCA®, CHPN®, CHPPN®, and CPLC® certificants renew through HPAR.
- CHPLN® and CHPNA® certificants have the option to renew by HPAR or by testing.
LearningBuilder is the platform HPCC uses for recertification for the ACHPN®, APHSW-C, CHPCA®, CHPLN®, CHPN®, CHPNA®, CHPPN®, and CPLC® certifications. Through LearningBuilder, each certificant has an individual Learning Plan where they can enter their activities required for renewal.
The SJE is a required component of the recertification process for ACHPN® and CHPN® certificants. It uses a series of case-based scenarios to evaluate critical reasoning and clinical application of content beyond the level of the initial certification exam. The SJE is not pass/fail, but rather an exercise to evaluate skills.
You may complete the SJE at any time during your four-year certification period. However, HPCC recommends that it is completed at least 30 days before the expiration of your certification. It takes the SJE at least one business day to be loaded into a Learning Plan. The SJE can be completed individually or with others in a group. If you complete the SJE in a group, each certificant must purchase the exercise, complete it, and submit it to receive credit.
Learn MoreThe Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) provides scholarships each year to nurses and other members of the interprofessional team to cover the cost of fees for those earning or renewing an HPCC credential.
Last year, HPNF awarded 25 scholarships to HPCC certificants.
