Q&A With Homes for Heroes Foundation Director Jay Flynn on Supporting HPNF’s Mission

The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) was honored to receive a generous $12,500 grant from the Homes for Heroes Foundation in support of hospice and palliative care nurses nationwide. To learn more about the inspiration behind this meaningful partnership, HPNF spoke with Foundation Director Jay Flynn about the organization’s commitment to supporting the HPNF mission and the compassionate nurses who provide expert care to patients and families every day.
What inspired Homes for Heroes Foundation to invest in hospice and palliative care nurses?
Hospice and palliative care nurses step into some of the most vulnerable, emotional moments a family will ever experience. They’re not just providing medical care. They’re creating space for dignity, comfort, and peace when everything else feels uncertain. For us, supporting them was a natural extension of our mission. We exist to do the right thing and to support heroes and their families through real-life challenges. These nurses support families through serious illness and end-of-life care. So when we invest in them, we’re also supporting the ripple effect of care they provide every single day. It’s deeply aligned with who we are and why we exist.
What makes nurses—especially in hospice and palliative care—stand out as heroes?
It’s the level of compassion they bring under pressure. Hospice and palliative care nurses carry an emotional weight that most people never fully see, and yet they continue to show up with patience, empathy, and strength. They’re advocates for dignity and comfort in life’s final chapter. They sit with families in grief, guide them through uncertainty, and make sure their patients are treated with humanity every step of the way. Their impact isn’t always visible, but it’s lasting. To us, that quiet, consistent, selfless presence is the truest definition of a hero.
How would you describe Homes for Heroes in everyday terms?
At its core, we connect heroes like nurses, first responders, law enforcement officers, teachers, and military members with real estate and mortgage professionals who are committed to serving them. When they buy or sell a home, they receive a Hero Reward as a thank you for what they do in the form of financial savings after closing. But it doesn’t stop there. Through our Circle of Giving, a portion of every transaction funds our Foundation, which grants aid to heroes facing hardship. So what starts as a home transaction becomes something bigger.
What do you love most about the work you do for heroes?
We love that it’s both tangible and deeply meaningful. We’re helping heroes save real money, ease stress, and create opportunity. The most important thing is that we want to remind them how thankful we are for their work. We know the work they do isn’t easy. Through the Foundation, we’re able to show up in moments that truly matter. Whether it’s helping someone stay in their home or recover from an unexpected crisis, the impact is real, and that’s what makes this work so fulfilling.
Can you share a story that has stayed with you?
There are so many moments that stay with us, especially when support shows up exactly when it’s needed most. One that stands out is the work we’ve done alongside organizations like the Native American Nurse Association. Providing support in often underserved communities was incredibly meaningful. It was about more than financial assistance; it was about recognition and respect. More broadly, we’ve seen healthcare workers navigating personal hardships, whether it’s a medical challenge, housing instability, or financial strain, and being able to step in during those moments reminds us why this work exists. It’s real people, real impact, at the right time.
How do you hope your program eases the burden for nurses?
We know we can’t take away the emotional and physical demands of the job, but we can help in ways that are practical and meaningful. We provide access to trusted professionals who simplify the homebuying or selling process, which removes a lot of uncertainty and stress. The financial reward after closing is another way we say “thank you” and it can make a real difference. Beyond that, our Foundation exists to support heroes facing hardship. It’s about creating a system where our heroes feel supported not just in one moment, but throughout different seasons of life.
What would you say to a nurse who isn’t sure homeownership is possible?
We would say you’re closer than you think, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. People like our affiliates are committed to making it not only possible, but the best experience imaginable. Homeownership can feel overwhelming, especially with everything nurses already carry day to day. But with the right support and guidance, small steps can turn into real progress. Our program is built specifically for heroes, which means it’s designed to meet you where you are. You don’t need to have all the answers; you just need to take that first step.
What’s the first step for a nurse who’s curious about the program?
The first step is simple. Visit our website and register. It only takes a few minutes. It’s a no-obligation system, and you will be paired with a local specialist ready to serve you. We’ll connect you with a local affiliate who understands both your market and your needs. Typically, that starts with a quick, no-pressure conversation to answer questions and help you understand your options. It’s meant to feel approachable, not overwhelming.
What’s one thing you wish every nurse knew about Homes for Heroes?
We wish every nurse knew that this program truly is for them. Every nurse is eligible, and everything we’ve built is centered around supporting their life of service. It’s not just about the financial savings, but it’s truly about being part of something bigger. A community that recognizes what they do, gives back, and is built with their best interests in mind. There’s real value here, and it’s designed specifically for them. And you can use it as many times as you’d like. Most importantly, we are here for you through every step of your journey.
What does it mean to serve those who care for others?
Serving those who care for others means recognizing the sacrifices they make and ensuring they are supported in return. In addition to being the Homes for Heroes Foundation Director, I serve as a Fire Chief, my wife works in elementary education, and my daughter is pursuing her BSN. Service has been a constant in my life for over 30 years, and I understand firsthand what it means to put others first, even when it comes at a personal cost. Nurses and other heroes are present during some of the most difficult moments people will ever face. Supporting them is not just important, it’s a responsibility. It’s both a privilege and a duty I take seriously, and I’m proud to be part of work that creates meaningful, human impact.
