In the years since the first edition of the Business Guide was published, much has changed in palliative advanced practice registered nursing. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing created new requirements for licensure, accreditation, certification, and education. Palliative medicine was recognized as a medical specialty. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) released the Future of Nursing Report promoting APRN practice to the full extent of scope of practice. The National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care Clinical Practice Guidelines endorse palliative certification for specialty practice for nursing, medicine, social work, and chaplaincy. The American Nurses Association has updated the Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics. The American Nurses Association and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Palliative Nursing: Scope and Standards defined primary and palliative nursing as well as advanced practice palliative nursing. The Competencies for the Hospice and Palliative Advanced Practice Nurse reflect the updated practice of the APN. This guide integrates these changes in the field within the chapters.
