APRN Webinar: Providing Palliative Care to LGBTQ Patients
APRN Webinar: Providing Palliative Care to LGBTQ Patients
Presented by Nina Barrett, MSN, ACHPN, AGPCNP-BC

There is a lack of knowledge and education available to palliative care providers about the optimal provision of hospice and palliative care to LGBTQ patients, and gaps in knowledge persist owing to a dearth of research on LGBTQ patients in hospice and palliative care settings.

This course will help identify the unique health needs of the LGBTQ palliative care patient, including issues regarding disclosure and advance care planning. It will also help recognize the health disparities affecting the LGBTQ population, their historical roots, and the extra challenges facing transgender patients. Participants will be able to formulate strategies for improving care of LGBTQ palliative care patients, including changes in individual and institutional practices.

Nina Barrett, MSN, ACHPN, AGPCNP-BC, has nearly a decade of nursing experience, first as a bedside nurse in a variety of in-patient settings, including general medicine, respiratory step-down, hematology-oncology, and bone marrow transplant. She became a dual certified Palliative Care and Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner in 2014, working first at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City and now at Longmont United Hospital in Longmont, Colorado. Nina has co-authored several studies relating to the provision of Palliative Care in the Emergency Department, and co-authored a book chapter on providing Palliative Care to LBGTQ patients.

This webinar was recorded November 21, 2018, and is available through HPNA University.
